United Kingdom
The United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) processes design applications in the United Kingdom. The UKIPO holds a globally renowned application management system and design applications in the UK usually gets processed within 6 weeks from the date of filing.
The UKIPO holds a system for protection of registered as well as unregistered designs. South African Design
The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) governs the South African Design registration process. In South Africa the design applications are classified into two types as aesthetic design and functional design.
An aesthetic design application is applicable for designs that are novel and unique only in the visual aspects of shape, configuration or ornamentation; in other words an aesthetic design relates only to the physical appearance of a product and not its use. An aesthetic design in South Africa is valid for 15 years from the date of filing.
A functional design application is applicable for designs that are novel and unique in the functional aspects of its shape and configuration making the product unique and novel with reference to the product’s usability; in other words, if the design of a product created to improve the efficiency of the practical use / needs of a user then they fall under the category of functional designs. A functional design is valid of 10 years from the date of filing.

European Design
The European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) processes design applications as a common office for all the contracting member states. A design application filed with the EUIPO and registered will be valid in 27 member states without the need for validating in each member state separately (validating although not mandatory, will be useful during litigation procedures).
Alike the United Kingdom, the EUIPO also has two categories of designs known as Registered Community Design and Unregistered Community Design.
